NORTHRIDGE, California (KCAL, KCBS) — A driver allegedly wanted for burglary was arrested in the San Fernando Valley after leading police on a violent and reckless pursuit on Friday morning.
Police began pursuing the driver around 10:12 a.m. near Oxnard and Lankershim.
Aerial footage of the pursuit showed the driver traveling at a high rate of speed on surface streets. Several times throughout the pursuit, the driver was seen swerving in and out of lanes on the freeway.
The driver nearly collided with a delivery driver on a moped. The delivery driver began following the suspect, signaling him to pull over.
The LAPD said during a pursuit, nobody should follow a suspect besides police.
At one point, the driver stopped at an Arco gas station near Nordhoff Street and Haskell Avenue and pumped gas before traveling back on the street. He also drove onto the campus of Cal State Northridge and led police through a parking garage before getting away.
The driver was also going in the wrong direction while trying to get on the southbound 405 Freeway near Mission Hills, nearly hitting other cars.
Police successfully deployed a spike strip. The driver continued to travel for several miles before crashing into an LAPD patrol unit and a bystander’s car around 11:36 a.m. on the southbound 405 Freeway at Nordhoff Street.
The moped driver is also in police custody for interfering with a pursuit.
