LOS ANGELES (KCAL, KCBS) — One person is dead, and another is injured after a tour bus caught on fire on the eastbound 60 Freeway in the City of Industry on Friday morning.
The California Highway Patrol said they received a call around 5:38 a.m. about a bus on fire. The bus driver had pulled over to the right shoulder after he saw the check engine light was on.
“Once he was stopped on the right shoulder, he noticed smoke emerging from the rear of the vehicle,” CHP officer Zachary Salazar said.
The driver then had all the passengers evacuate as quickly as possible as a fire engulfed the vehicle. There were 18 people on board, and the driver.
After crews put out the flames, they found one person on board who appeared to have died from exposure to the fire. Another person was taken to the hospital for treatment.
‘I get up from my seat and I turned to the back and I see the smoke and I started yelling to the people, and to the driver, ‘the bus is on fire,'” one passenger said, noting she couldn’t see anything.
Fire crews recovered several propane tanks and luggage from the scene; investigators are determining if the tanks contributed to the fire. The Viajes Azteca bus was headed to Bloomington to pick up more passengers before its final destination in Mexico.
The fire shut down several lanes of the freeway near Azusa Avenue, and aerial footage of the scene showed traffic delays. By 10:53 a.m., only one lane remained shut down.
The bus company had received a satisfactory safety rating, with no other incidents reported.
