Democrats have prevailed in Tuesday’s special elections to fill two vacancies in the Virginia General Assembly.
Gov. Abigail Spanberger’s nomination of State Sen. Adam Ebbin to her administration triggered a domino effect that opened two seats in the state’s legislature.
Another sitting legislator, Elizabeth Bennett-Parker, left her position in the House of Delegates with hopes of succeeding Ebbin, who represented Virginia Senate District 39.
She was victorious in that effort, earning 82.6% of the vote in District 39 and beating Republican nominee Julie Lineberry, as of noon Wednesday.
Alexandria voters also elected a new delegate to replace Bennett-Parker Tuesday.
Democrat Kirk McPike won 91.5% of the vote in House District 5, defeating Republican nominee Mason Butler.
The special elections happened in Alexandria, as well as parts of Arlington and Fairfax counties. Tuesday’s election followed a series of races around the commonwealth to fill open seats left behind by legislators Spanberger picked to join her administration.
