LONG BEACH, California (KCAL, KCBS) — A second jet skier who went missing off the coast in Long Beach on Sunday night has been found alive and hypothermic, the U.S. Coast Guard says.
Long Beach Fire Department Captain Jack Crabtree told CBS LA that they were contacted at around 10 p.m. on Sunday after learning that two members of a large group of people riding jet skis were unaccounted for near the Alamitos Bay Landing.
Soon after authorities began their search, they found a woman in her 40s, who has not been identified yet, on a breakwall where she was able to flag down some fishermen who contacted LBFD, Crabtree said.
The man, identified as 53-year-old Paul Anthony Carbullido, was found at around 11 a.m. on Monday, 16 hours after the search began. Firefighters said he was found about three miles from the Seal Beach Pier and suffering from hypothermia.
“The woman reported that she and Carbullido had rented two personal watercraft and departed from Rainbow Harbor earlier that evening. While operating the watercraft outside the breakwall, Carbullido fell into the water,” a news release from USCG officials said.
When the woman entered the water to assist Carbullido, she was unsuccessful.
“She then attempted to reboard her watercraft and start the engine but was unable to do so. The woman re-entered the water and swam for approximately an hour before reaching the breakwall,” the Coast Guard said.
Long Beach officials said one jet ski was located around 1:15 a.m. and around 1:45 a.m., the second was found in the open water past the sea wall. Both were spotted by the Coast Guard helicopter.
