BALTIMORE, Maryland (WBAL) — Baltimore police are investigating a robbery at a Wells Fargo branch near East Northern Parkway and Loch Raven Boulevard where thieves used construction equipment to steal an ATM early Sunday morning.
Police said they responded to the bank just after 5:30 a.m. following an alarm.
When officers arrived, they found part of the building’s front damaged, the ATM missing, and an abandoned excavator left in the parking lot.
WBAL-TV 11 News contacted a construction company in Prince George’s County that may have owned truck and trailer that was stolen and used to transport the excavator.
A representative from the company could tell us is that they are cooperating with police.
Customers expressed shock at the robbery and the method used.
“That’s unbelievable,” one person said.
Another added, “It’s crazy. I’ve never heard of anything like that in my life.”
Some questioned the thieves’ plans after stealing the ATM.
“They’ll go through any lengths to get what they want,” one person said.
Another asked, “What are they going to do with the ATM machine? Once they take it out, how are they going to get into the ATM machine?”
Others noted the rarity of such a crime in the area.
A camera is positioned above the part of the building that was damaged, but police have not yet released any footage it may have captured.
A Wells Fargo representative said the bank will reopen at 9 a.m. on Tuesday.
Eastern District detectives are currently investigating this incident.
