Se formó la tormenta tropical Cristóbal en el Atlántico. ¿Podrá sobrevivir a las condiciones hostiles de El Niño?

El Niño ha mantenido la temporada de huracanes del Atlántico en suspenso durante semanas, ya que impidió en gran medida que la cuenca se active y genere tormentas, pero ahora ha despertado de su letargo.

La tormenta tropical Cristóbal se formó en el Atlántico norte a última hora de la mañana de este miércoles con vientos sostenidos de 72 km/h, según el Centro Nacional de Huracanes. Cristóbal cobró vida después de que el centro le hubiera dado solo una probabilidad de desarrollo del 50 % a primera hora del día.

Se pronostica que Cristobal tendrá una corta duración sobre mar abierto, pero podría unirse pronto a una tormenta tropical más intensa.

El centro sigue monitoreando un área en el Atlántico tropical con una probabilidad de alrededor del 80 %, o “alta”, de convertirse al menos en una depresión tropical a finales de esta semana. También hay un área justo al este con una baja probabilidad de desarrollo en los próximos días.

La próxima tormenta tropical que se forme en cualquier parte de la cuenca se llamará Dolly.

A mediados de agosto suele ser cuando los trópicos entran en su período de mayor actividad, pero cualquier sistema que aspire a desarrollarse como trópico tendrá que luchar contra viento y marea para formarse y sobrevivir frente a la influencia de El Niño.

El principal desafío que enfrentan estos sistemas es la intensa cizalladura del viento asociada a El Niño, que es capaz de disipar tormentas. Es una fuerza que probablemente persistirá a medida que El Niño se intensifique en los próximos meses, llegando a convertirse potencialmente en un “Super El Niño” de récord.

La cizalladura del viento consiste en un cambio en la velocidad o dirección del viento a diferentes niveles de la atmósfera, que puede impedir la formación inicial de tormentas, frenar su fortalecimiento o incluso desintegrarlas por completo. Actualmente, esta condición está firmemente establecida sobre las zonas del Atlántico que, en condiciones normales, registrarían la mayor actividad.

Este es precisamente el escenario que motivó, desde un principio, los numerosos pronósticos de una temporada con actividad inferior a la media. Hasta ahora, la temporada de huracanes ha cumplido con dichas expectativas: ha sido el inicio de temporada menos activo desde 2009.

Arthur y Bertha han sido las únicas tormentas tropicales registradas hasta la fecha. Ambas se formaron cerca de la costa del Golfo y sufrieron el constante embate de la cizalladura del viento durante todo su recorrido, lo que impidió que se fortalecieran significativamente y limitó su impacto general.

Las próximas tormentas tropicales presentan una situación similar, aunque en ubicaciones diferentes.

La formación de Cristobal marca la primera vez en esta temporada que una tormenta se forma fuera de la costa de Estados Unidos. Afortunadamente, no representa una amenaza para tierra firme. Pronto se adentrará en aguas más frías y podría disiparse el jueves por la tarde.

Todas las miradas siguen puestas en la otra zona del Atlántico con alta probabilidad de formación. Esta área del océano, conocida como la principal región de desarrollo, debería estar muy activa en esta época del año, ya que la cizalladura del viento disminuye y las temperaturas del agua aumentan, proporcionando a los sistemas tropicales abundante energía.

Pero debido a El Niño, la cizalladura del viento persiste y recientemente ha alcanzado niveles récord, según Phil Klotzbach, experto en huracanes de la Universidad Estatal de Colorado.

Podría haber una oportunidad después del miércoles para que el sistema con alta probabilidad de desarrollo reciba el impulso de energía suficiente para superar parte de la cizalladura. Podría convertirse en depresión tropical tan pronto como el jueves, mientras se desplaza hacia el oeste a través del Atlántico tropical. Sin embargo, no está claro cuánto más fuerte podría llegar a ser. Los modelos de pronóstico por computadora están comenzando a determinar su trayectoria. La mayoría ahora la sitúan hacia el Caribe oriental este fin de semana, donde continuaría enfrentando una mayor cizalladura del viento.

Debemos continuar monitoreando la zona de baja probabilidad de desarrollo en el extremo oriental del Atlántico tropical en los próximos días. Enfrenta problemas de cizalladura similares a los de la zona más al oeste.

Una temporada normal de huracanes en el Atlántico generalmente tiene al menos tres tormentas tropicales para el 3 de agosto y cuatro para el 15 de agosto. Arthur impactó la costa del Golfo de Estados Unidos a mediados de junio y Bertha a finales de julio.

La temporada también está retrasada en cuanto a huracanes: el primer huracán de la temporada generalmente se forma alrededor del 11 de agosto. El huracán Erin se formó solo unos días después de ese umbral en 2025 y en 2024 ya se habían registrado dos huracanes para esa fecha.

Entre mediados de agosto y mediados de octubre es cuando se forman la mayoría de las tormentas tropicales y huracanes, por lo que aún hay tiempo suficiente para que se formen sistemas tropicales. Sin embargo, varios grupos, incluyendo la Administración Nacional Oceánica y Atmosférica (NOAA) y la Universidad Estatal de Colorado, confían cada vez más en sus pronósticos de una temporada con poca actividad.

La NOAA publicó una actualización de su pronóstico la semana pasada, elevando la probabilidad de una temporada por debajo del promedio del 55 % al ​​75 %. Dicho pronóstico también redujo notablemente el rango para el número total de huracanes importantes (categoría 3 o superior) de uno a tres a cero a dos.

Si la temporada de 2026 termina sin un huracán importante, sería la primera vez desde 2013 que no se registra una tormenta tan poderosa.
