CA: GOVERNOR NEWSOM LISTS HOME FOR $7.5M

SACRAMENTO, California (KOVR) — California Gov. Gavin Newsom and his family are selling their Sacramento-area home as the governor prepares to leave office in January 2027.
Newsom’s approximately 12,700-square-foot home on Tobia Way in Fair Oaks was listed Monday for $7.5 million.
Newsom spokesperson Izzy Gardon said the family began transitioning to Marin County in 2024, when they purchased a home there to provide continuity for their children’s education.
“The sale of their Sacramento home is the next step in that transition,” Gardon said.
Real estate appraiser Ryan Lundquist is watching to see how many possible buyers will try and meet the asking price for the Newsom home.
The Newsoms bought it for a Fair Oaks record $3.9 million in 2018. The record still stands as it now hits the market for $7.5 million.
“This is outlier territory. Very few people compete at this level,” Lundquist said.
Newsom’s office said he is the third consecutive California governor to split his time between Sacramento and another part of the state, though the Fair Oaks property is roughly 15 miles from the State Capitol.
Former Gov. Jerry Brown commuted from his home in Oakland for part of his time in office, while former Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger commuted from Los Angeles throughout his tenure.
Rob Stutzman worked for Schwarzenegger.
“Remarkably, California does not provide its governor with a residence,” Stutzman said. “The problem is no one wants to be the governor that comes in and says, ‘hey taxpayers, buy me a house to live in,’ so it’s been a difficult problem.”
The sale of the Tobia Way property comes as the governor enters the final months of his second term. California limits governors to two terms, meaning Newsom was unable to seek reelection.
Sally Dunbar lives near the governor’s Fair Oaks home. Newsom once wrote a handwritten note to her after protesters descended on their block.
“It’s hard to read his writing: ‘I’m so sorry about all the disruption I have brought to the neighborhood, all my best, Gavin,’ ” Dunbar said, reading the letter.
Dunbar hopes whoever the next governor is they might consider making this their home too.
“It has a tennis court, swimming pool, great neighbors, awesome neighbors, I have to say,” Dunbar said.
