ETTRICK, Virginia (WTVR) — Five people were injured, one critically, in a shooting outside Virginia State University dormitories that prompted a campus-wide lockdown for hours early Saturday morning, according to authorities.
Officers were called to the 3300 block of Boisseau Street at 1:30 a.m. for a report of a shooting, according to Lt. James Lamb with Chesterfield Police.
When police arrived, they found five people suffering from gunshot wounds outside VSU dorms. Officials with the university said the shooting happened near the Quad Annexes.
All five victims were taken to nearby hospitals, where one who initially had life-threatening injuries was upgraded to critical condition and the remaining four were treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
Crime Insider sources told Jon Burkett the injuries appeared to be graze wounds.
VSU officials confirmed the shooting involved multiple suspects in a post to social media just before 6 a.m.
Officials said the lockdown had been lifted in another post just around 8:20 a.m.
“A significant law enforcement presence remains on campus as investigators process the scene. Virginia State University Police, ATF, and the Hanover County Sheriff’s Office are assisting with the ongoing investigation,” Lamb said.
No additional details about arrests or the circumstances surrounding the shooting were available at last check.
Officials with the school urged students to “continue to avoid the area and follow all law enforcement instructions.”
Classes are set to begin at the Historically Black University on Monday. The school welcomed nearly 1,500 new students with a special pinning ceremony Friday morning, featuring NFL MVP Cam Newton as the guest speaker.
