Brumbaugh’s 35 lead Tulane over Memphis in American Athletic Conference Tournament 81-69

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — Rowan Brumbaugh’s 35 points led No. 9 seed Tulane over eighth-seeded Memphis 81-69 on Wednesday night in the American Athletic Conference Tournament.

Tulane (18-14) plays No. 5 seed Charlotte in the second round Thursday.

Memphis (13-19) lost eight straight to end the season.

Brumbaugh also added eight rebounds for the Green Wave. Curtis Williams scored 11 points and added seven rebounds. Tyler Ringgold shot 1 of 6 from the field and 6 for 8 from the free-throw line to finish with nine points.

Julius Thedford finished with 13 points and two steals for the Tigers. Zachary Davis added 12 points, eight rebounds, two steals and two blocks for Memphis. Dug McDaniel also had 11 points and six rebounds. The loss was the Tigers’ eighth in a row.

Tulane took the lead for good with 6:16 remaining in the first half. The score was 39-31 at halftime, with Brumbaugh racking up 10 points. Tulane pulled away with an 8-0 run in the second half to extend a three-point lead to 11 points. The Green Wave outscored Memphis by four points in the final half, as Brumbaugh led the way with a team-high 25 second-half points.

Hawkeyes are set to play Vanderbilt in a November women’s basketball game in Sioux City, Iowa

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (AP) — Vanderbilt and Iowa, both ranked in the top 10 late last season, will meet in a women's basketball game early next season in northwest Iowa, the schools announced Tuesday. The neutral-site game is set for Nov. 15 at the Tyson Events Center, which is 290 miles from Carver-Hawkeye Arena in Iowa City. Vanderbilt is 4-0 all-time against the Hawkeyes. This will be the teams' first meeting since 1997. The Commodores are expected to return national scoring leader Mikayla Blakes. She averaged 27 points per game and was Southeastern Conference player of the year. Vanderbilt was ranked as high as No. 5 and finished No. 10 with a 29-5 record after reaching the NCAA Sweet 16.
