DC area under heat and severe weather alerts as storms hit the region

After a sweltering and stormy Fourth of July that briefly forced visitors to evacuate the National Mall and delayed the fireworks show, showers and thunderstorms are blasting the D.C. area Sunday.

These storms are already having an impact as there are reports of downed trees in parts of the region such as Takoma Park and Reston. The heavy rain is already causing visibility issues for drivers and has the potential to cause heavy flooding.

The D.C. area remains under multiple weather alerts issued Sunday.

There is a flood watch in effect until 1 a.m. on Monday for portions of Maryland, including Anne Arundel, Carroll, Frederick, Howard and Montgomery counties.

The unsettled pattern continues Monday, with additional showers and thunderstorms likely and the potential for urban flooding. Conditions should gradually improve Tuesday, although a few showers may linger early before humidity begins to ease.

The District said it is encouraging residents to stay hydrated, take breaks in air-conditioned spaces and check on vulnerable neighbors.

Forecast

SUNDAY NIGHT: Scattered showers and thunderstorms, diminishing after midnight. Storms may produce damaging winds, large hail and torrential downpours. Lows in the upper 60s to lower 70s.

MONDAY: Chance of a shower in the morning. Showers and storms likely in the afternoon. Storms may be severe. Heavy rain may cause flooding. Highs between 85 to 90.

TUESDAY: Showers and a risk of thunderstorms. Highs in the 80s.

WEDNESDAY: A chance of showers and afternoon storms. Highs between 80 to 85.

THURSDAY: Muggy with a chance of showers and afternoon thunderstorms. Highs in the upper 80s to lower 90s.
