After heavy storms on Sunday that grounded some regional airports, this last week of July will feature intense heat, with high temperatures Monday through Wednesday soaring well into the 90s.
On Monday, the D.C. area won’t see the severe thunderstorms of the day before, 7News First Alert Senior Meteorologist Brian van de Graaff said. But heat index values will peak in the low 100s in the afternoon. Stay safe by drinking lots of water, and taking breaks in the shade or air-conditioned environments.
An extreme heat alert issued by D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser over the weekend will remain in effect until Thursday at 8 a.m. D.C. will open cooling centers this week. Find the closest cooling center to you online.
On Tuesday, temperatures are expected to climb even higher than on Monday, reaching the middle 90s, van de Graaff said. But it’s going to feel even hotter with the heat index escalating to near 105. Heat advisories are likely from the National Weather Service. Overnight temperatures may feel like 80 or hotter.
A final day of the extreme heat is expected Wednesday, with highs in the middle to upper 90s. Again, the heat index will register above 105, so stay safe. Expect another heat advisory.
Finally, van de Graaff said on Thursday the D.C. region will see some relief from the dangerous temperatures and swampy humidity. A midsummer cold front comes sweeping through with cooler, less humid air across the D.C. region. Expect showers and storms throughout the day as the front moves through with winds becoming northerly.
