A foggy morning and passing rain showers Tuesday are a prequel to what’s expected to be an impactful weather system bringing gusty storms to the D.C. region.
The chance for rain increases after sunset on Tuesday. The wet weather will continue as heavy showers soak the region through Wednesday afternoon.
Morning commuters should prepare for a slippery drive into work with possible ponding. Along with the heavy rain, storms could bring thunder and damaging winds.
“Winds picking up as the front moves through,” 7News First Alert Meteorologist Jordan Evans said. “Some of those wind gusts, especially east of I-95, may reach severe limits up to 55 mph.”
Winds are expected to pick up Wednesday afternoon. Make sure to secure any outdoor holiday decorations or store them inside and be ready in the event the power is knocked out.

7News Chief Meteorologist Veronica Johnson also said rain totals could reach over an inch Wednesday, adding wind gusts were expected to hit 35 mph.
“Rainfall will be heavy through the afternoon with rain tapering off from west to east shortly after sunset,” Johnson said.
The most severe weather is expected to move through the region from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., Johnson said.
After enduring all that, the reward is the return of bone-chilling temperatures Thursday. Wind chills will drop back down to as low as 19 degrees Thursday morning.
