The workweek kicked off hot and humid in the D.C. area, with thunderstorms slamming parts of Maryland Monday afternoon. Here’s what you need to know.
Strong storms made their way through the region in time for the evening commute, Storm Team4 meteorologist Mike Stinneford said, bringing damaging winds and large hail.
Tornado warnings were issued for parts of Carroll and Baltimore counties earlier, and they have since been canceled. A severe thunderstorm watch and a flood watch for the D.C. area have also been canceled.
The storms are expected to end by midnight, Stinneford said. However, damages, including downed trees, have been reported in parts of Carroll, Frederick, Montgomery and Baltimore counties in Maryland, as well as in Middleburg in Loudoun County, Virginia.

First heat wave of the year
The D.C. area is headed into its first heat wave of the year, Storm Team4 meteorologist Lauryn Ricketts said. That means highs will be at 90 or above for at least three consecutive days. That heat will hold into the weekend.
As heat rises into the 90s with the potential to feel like more than 100 degrees, staying hydrated, dressing light and take frequent breaks will be critical.
Monday night, the temperature will drop into the 60s and 70s and the rain will let up.
Tuesday will be humid and there could be a pop-up shower but it will be mostly dry throughout the day.
Wednesday could be the sunniest day of the week, though it will be hot.
A cold front expected to hit the area on Thursday will bring back the chances of showers and thunderstorms.
This week’s weather adds to an already wet July for the region.
“Reagan National Airport has measured 6.56 inches of rain this month,” Storm Team4 meteorologist Chad Merrill said, “making it the ninth wettest July since 1941.”
