A heat emergency has been activated for D.C. on Monday, as temperatures are expected to climb into the 90s. Cooling centers will be open across the District, something the city does when the heat index or temperature is forecast to reach 95 degrees or higher. The city offers tips for dealing with extreme heat on its website.

“It is going to be incredibly hot,” said NBC Washington meteorologist Lauryn Ricketts. Monday — the first full day of summer — will be mostly sunny, before clouds roll in with a risk of showers. Isolated severe storms are possible Monday and Tuesday as well, along with the potential for localized flash flooding.
