BOSTON (WCVB) — Boston’s iconic CITGO sign, currently under renovation, has taken on a temporary shape that locals and tourists say resembles a middle finger, drawing laughter and attention.
“Maybe like we’re, we’re, we’re, we’re getting the middle finger,” one person said.
Another observer asked, “What does it look like now?” and answered, “Looks like a bird.”
“It looks like the middle finger; that’s ridiculous,” another person said.
The 60-foot by 60-foot sign, typically a square, has taken on a new shape during its restoration, sparking playful reactions from the community.
“Yeah, pretty Boston,” one person said.
“That’s a fair representation,” another added.
“Nobody’s ever gotten the bird ever driving the road here?”
The sign’s temporary appearance has been met with humor, but the restoration process is moving forward. The 11-foot letters and iconic red logo are expected to return to their original form by November.
The sign was moved months ago, piece by piece, to be perched 30 feet higher at its original home at 660 Beacon St. The relocation ensures the 60-year-old landmark remains visible and unblocked by any future developments.
“It’s a work in progress; it’ll be done soon,” one person said.
