Rep. Jimmy Gomez accuser told House Ethics Committee he sexually assaulted her, attorneys say

(CNN) — A woman has told the House Ethics Committee that Democratic Rep. Jimmy Gomez sexually harassed and assaulted her, her attorneys said in a statement on Wednesday.

The Ethics Committee announced Monday that it had opened an investigation into allegations of sexual misconduct against Gomez, including “engaging in inappropriate sexual contact” with a staffer, which would be a violation of House ethics rules.

Gomez on Monday acknowledged that he made “personal mistakes outside my marriage” but said that his actions “were consensual in nature and haven’t violated the law or House Ethics rules.”

However, one woman who has not publicly shared her name told the committee Gomez’s actions toward her were not consensual, according to her attorneys, Lisa J. Banks and Sarah E. Nesbitt.

“We represent one of the women who was interviewed by the House Committee on Ethics about her experience of sexual harassment and assault by Representative Jimmy Gomez,” the attorneys said in a statement. “Contrary to Representative Gomez’s assertion in his statement, his actions were not ‘consensual in nature’ with respect to our client. We fully expect that the House Committee on Ethics will come to the same conclusion in its investigation.”

Gomez did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the attorneys’ allegations, which CNN has not independently corroborated. It was not clear from Gomez’s earlier statement about a consensual relationship whether he was referring to his actions with the same woman. A spokesperson for the House Ethics Committee declined to comment on the attorneys’ statement.

Monday’s announcement from the Ethics Committee about the probe into Gomez came after three sources told CNN exclusively in June that the panel was investigating the California congressman, who represents parts of Los Angeles.

The sources, who asked not to be named to protect their identities, said the panel had made early reach-outs in its attempt to follow up on a New York Post story, which alleged Gomez had been spotted kissing an aide, who worked for a different member of Congress, in 2023. A Gomez spokesperson told The Post at the time that the accounts were “not true” and the incident “didn’t happen.”

In looking into that claim, one of the sources told CNN, the panel learned of other allegations of sexual misconduct against Gomez that it is now investigating.

Gomez has said he would “cooperate with any Ethics Committee inquiry and provide it with whatever information it might need.”

The ethics panel said Monday that the existence of an investigation and public disclosure of the investigation “does not itself indicate that any violation has occurred.”

Over 150 years later, the boardwalk remains the heart of Atlantic City, New Jersey

Click here for updates on this story    Philadelphia (KYW) -- From souvenir shops to restaurants, casinos and hotels, many people consider the boardwalk the heart of Atlantic City, New Jersey."I enjoy walking around, looking at the stands, the beach," Erminie Pennisi said."Seeing the birds fly, the people, the food," Cynthia Lewis said."You got the ocean. You see all types of people from all walks of life," Joseph Smith said.Generations of families, visitors and vacationers have been walking the boards, soaking in the sights and experiencing a key piece of Atlantic City's history."Everything that used to be and everything that is, is based around the boardwalk," Heather Perez, an Atlantic County historian, said. This summer marks 156 years of the Atlantic City Boardwalk. The first section of the boardwalk opened on June 26, 1870.Perez says Atlantic City was becoming a popular summer resort, and the idea for the first wooden walkway all started with keeping sand out of railroad cars and hotels."The hotel owners were frustrated because the women in their long Victorian gowns were tracking all of this sand into the lobbies and they were trying to sweep and get all the sand out of their carpets and their floors," Perez said.At that time, the boardwalk was only 1 mile long and 8 feet wide, and it could be taken apart and preserved during the winter. But as the city grew in popularity, so did the boardwalk. In 1898, Steel Pier opened, which became a venue for entertainment and excitement."I do think that they saw opportunity here. It's a place people could come on vacation," Danielle Osakwe, archivist at the Atlantic City Free Public Library, said.In 1921, the Miss America pageant was founded, a major event held in Atlantic City for decades that helped extend the tourism season. Later came the casinos, and the boardwalk's popularity over the years has led to new attractions and businesses."It's had so much influence. It's been the inspiration for a lot of different things around the country, but it's still here and it's still going on. I just think that's pretty neat," Osakwe said.Today, the Atlantic City boardwalk stretches a little more than 5 miles long. Some businesses have come and gone, but the boardwalk is still bustling with activity. Steel Pier still entertains families, and the wooden walkway remains a tradition for many families."We just have a super time. There's lots to do on the boardwalk," Larry Zimmerman said."You cannot have Atlantic City without the boardwalk. It's tied together," Perez said. Please note: This story was provided to CNN Wire by an affiliate and does not contain original CNN reporting. This content carries a strict local market embargo.
