August 17, 2026 (Houston Style Magazine) — HOUSTON — After 43 remarkable years telling Houston’s stories, beloved broadcasting icon Melanie Lawson is investing in the next generation of Black journalists — earning a heartfelt salute from longtime friend and Houston Style Magazine Publisher Francis Page, Jr., who is himself approaching 38 years in publishing and understands firsthand the endurance, commitment and love of community required to build a lasting media legacy.
In journalism, a lasting legacy is rarely measured only by how many years someone spends in front of a camera, behind a microphone or putting ink on paper. The real measure is how many doors they open for those coming next.
Houston broadcasting legend Melanie Lawson has provided a powerful example of exactly that.
The longtime KTRK-TV/ABC13 journalist has committed a combined $86,000 to journalism scholarship efforts, with $43,000 benefiting the Houston Association of Black Journalists (HABJ) and another $43,000 supporting the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ).

The figure is beautifully symbolic: $1,000 for each of Lawson’s extraordinary 43 years in Houston television journalism.
For Houston Style Magazine Publisher and Editor Francis Page, Jr., Lawson’s gift carries special meaning.
Page, who has been publishing Houston Style Magazine since May 1989 — nearly 38 years — has traveled much of Houston’s modern media journey alongside Lawson and proudly salutes his longtime friend for turning a legendary career into a lasting investment in tomorrow’s storytellers.
“Melanie and I have been blessed to spend most of our professional lives telling Houston’s story from different corners of the media landscape,” said Francis Page, Jr. “She has 43 incredible years in broadcasting, and I’m knocking on the door of 38 years in publishing. I salute my ole friend Melanie Lawson because this gift speaks to who she has always been — talented, gracious, committed to Houston and willing to reach back and help the next generation move forward.”
That shared longevity is no small accomplishment.
For more than four decades, Lawson became one of Houston television’s most familiar and respected faces, covering the people, politics, tragedies, triumphs and cultural milestones that helped shape one of America’s most diverse cities.
Page and Houston Style Magazine, meanwhile, have spent nearly four decades documenting many of those same Houston chapters through the lens of community journalism, civic engagement, Black achievement and local history.
Two different platforms. One city. Generations of stories.
And now, another chapter worth celebrating.
Investing in the Next Generation
Lawson’s donation is especially meaningful because journalism scholarships do far more than help pay tuition. They can provide young journalists with the breathing room to pursue internships, strengthen reporting skills, buy equipment, attend conferences and remain focused on developing their craft.
For aspiring Black journalists, those opportunities can also mean entry into newsrooms where diverse voices remain essential to accurately reflecting the communities they serve.
The first $43,000 contribution supports HABJ, Lawson’s home chapter, strengthening opportunities for Houston-area students pursuing careers in journalism and communications.
The second $43,000 contribution benefits NABJ, extending that spirit of opportunity to aspiring journalists across the country.
The announcement came as Houston prepared for another major moment in Black journalism history: the city’s hosting of the 2027 NABJ Convention and Career Fair.
Lawson joined the Houston convention kickoff by Zoom, making her announcement at a fitting moment — one veteran Houston journalist investing in the future just as thousands of journalists prepare to bring their talents, ideas and professional energy back to the Bayou City.
The announcement was shared widely through Houston’s journalism community, including on the Facebook page of FOX 26 journalist Isiah Carey. Joy Sewing made the announcement, with coordination by Nakia Cooper, helping turn an already special kickoff into an unforgettable moment.
A Career That Keeps Giving
There is humility in what Lawson has done.
After 43 years of service, she could have simply accepted the applause, enjoyed retirement and allowed the accolades to roll in.
Instead, she chose to plant seeds.
That is what makes this gift bigger than a dollar amount.
It is a reminder that the strongest journalists do not simply report history. They help prepare someone else to report the next chapter.
From Francis Page, Jr. and the entire Houston Style Magazine family, we proudly salute Melanie Lawson — colleague, trailblazer, Houston broadcasting icon and longtime friend.
Forty-three years on television. Nearly 38 years in publishing. Two Houston media veterans still believing that the next generation deserves its opportunity to shine.
Melanie, Houston thanks you.
And the young journalists whose dreams will be strengthened by your generosity may one day thank you with something even more valuable:
great stories of their own.
