President Donald Trump delivered his first official State of the Union address of his second administration Tuesday night.
He shattered his own record, going longer than the 100-minute speech he gave before a joint session of Congress last year.
Trump’s main objective was convincing increasingly wary Americans that the economy is stronger than many believe, and that they should vote for more of the same by backing Republicans during November’s midterm elections.
His address also comes at a time when the president and the Republican Party have become unpopular with voters, according to polling, on issues such as the economy, immigration and foreign policy.
Virginia Gov. Abigail Spanberger delivered the Democratic response to the State of the Union address. Democrats are betting that her affordability-focused message, which helped her flip a Republican-held office last November, will resonate with the country.
