Employees at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center have an exit off the Baltimore-Washington Parkway that allows them to avoid crowding the roads around Greenbelt and drive straight into the facility. Well, they did.
In September 2021, the bridge that workers used to get on and off southbound 295 was hit by an excavator being towed by a truck, damaging the bridge so badly it hasn’t reopened.
New money in the recently passed federal omnibus budget will help NASA prioritize the reopening of the bridge.
The repair plans haven’t been finalized yet, so it’s not clear when the work will begin or end; but it’s believed the cost will run between $7.5 million and $10 million.
Nearly 5,000 drivers used the bridge every day. Another 120,000 vehicles drive under it every day.
