Crash on Chesapeake Bay Bridge prompts afternoon delays

A crash on Maryland’s Chesapeake Bay Bridge blocked traffic on the westbound span for hours Tuesday afternoon. The crash happened shortly before 3 p.m. Tuesday and involved at least four vehicles, including a car, a pickup truck, an SUV and a small van. The collision resulted in a large debris field. One person had life-threatening injuries and was flown to a hospital from Sandy Point. The westbound span was closed for more than two hours. Westbound traffic on Kent Island was diverted off of Route 50 at points between Castle Marina Road and Route 8. One right lane opened to westbound traffic around 5:15 p.m. All lanes on the westbound span were reopened around 6 p.m. Since the crash happened in the reversible lane, eastbound drivers were limited to two lanes. Eastbound traffic was slow from Bay Dale Drive to the eastbound span through Tuesday evening.
