A woman was hit by a vehicle and killed while crossing a busy highway in Clinton, Maryland, on Friday morning.
The Maryland State Police said the collision happened just before 7 a.m. on Branch Avenue near Surratts Road, not far from the MedStar Southern Maryland Hospital Center.
The woman was struck while trying to cross the southbound lanes of Branch Avenue, and then was hit by other vehicles. The police said someone at a convenience store nearby said she was in there shortly before being struck and seemed disoriented.
The police said the woman didn’t have any identification on her. They added that the cause appears to be “pedestrian error,” saying she wasn’t in the crosswalk and didn’t look to see whether the road was clear. The driver who hit her first remained at the scene after the crash, and showed no signs of impairment, the police said; the other drivers who hit her drove off.
All lanes of Branch Avenue which were closed for a police investigation of the crash were reopened to traffic just after 9 a.m., according to the WTOP Traffic Center.
