Man charged after stabbing acquaintance at Westfield Montgomery Mall

WASHINGTON — A Gaithersburg man has been charged with attempted first-degree murder and first-degree assault after he stabbed an acquaintance at the Westfield Montgomery Mall in Bethesda, Maryland, on Sunday.

The 37-year-old victim was transported to a trauma center for surgery and is now in stable condition.

Police say the stabbing occurred just before 5 p.m. District officers and Fire and Rescue were called to the mall where they located the victim suffering from apparent stab wounds to his torso.

Jeffrey Lewis Sweeney-Grant, of Gaitherburg, turned himself in to mall security after the stabbing and was taken into custody.

Police also say that the two men were acquaintances and had agreed to meet at Nordstrom Cafe for coffee, but they are still unclear about the motive behind the stabbing.

The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with any information is urged to contact the 2nd District Investigative Section at 240-773-6710.

Below is the area of the incident.
