Wizards’ Sarr broke foot in workout, but team says he’s expected to recover before next season

WASHINGTON (AP) — Wizards big man Alex Sarr had surgery to repair a broken right foot, the team announced Monday.

The Wizards said Sarr was injured during an offseason workout and is expected to make a full recovery before next season. Dr. Martin J. O’Malley performed the procedure at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York.

The 7-foot Sarr was the second pick in the 2024 draft. He averaged 16.3 points per game last season along with 7.4 rebounds. He also shot 48.2% from the field, up from 39.4% as a rookie.

Washington has the first pick in this year’s draft later this month.

Aaron Donald's decision to come off the retirement couch and get back on the field after a two-year absence may be unusual but it's far from unprecedented. Donald joins a list of athletes who had called it quits after putting together Hall of Fame-caliber careers only to get the itch and decide to come back to play. “Do I feel like I can play at a high level? Yes,” Donald said Sunday after announcing his decision to return to the Los Angeles Rams and continue a career that already featured three AP Defensive Player of the Year awards and eight first-team All-Pro selections. “Do I feel like I can still be myself? One hundred percent, and if I didn’t feel like that, I wouldn’t be here.” Whether this comeback is more like Michael Jordan's first in the NBA when he won titles in his first three full seasons back, or his second, when he couldn't make the playoffs in two seasons with Washington, remains to be seen.
