Washington Commanders’ running back Brian Robinson Jr. is in stable condition after being shot in the leg during an attempted carjacking in Northeast D.C., according to police. District police said in a tweet that the shooting occurred around 5:30 p.m. on 10th & H Street NE, near Ben’s Chili Bowl.
Police told WTOP’s news partner NBC4 that the suspects attempted to take Robinson Jr.’s Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat, upon which a scuffle ensued and multiple shots were fired. Robinson has been hospitalized and is being treated for nonlife threatening injuries, according to police. A firearm was found near the scene of the incident, police told WTOP. In a tweet, the Commanders say team officials are at the hospital where Robinson is being treated, and ask that his privacy be respected.

District police say they are seeking two shooting suspects, both teenagers. One who was wearing a dark colored shirt and the other is wearing a shirt with yellow smiley faces. Robinson, a third-round draft pick in April, was expected to start for the Commanders this season. He had been particularly impressive during training camp and preseason games, likely earning the job over incumbent Antonio Gibson. “Brian’s been great,” offensive coordinator Scott Turner said recently. “He’s a real serious guy. Football is extremely important to him. He takes a lot of pride in being a physical runner.” The 6-foot-1, 228-pound back traveled with the team for its preseason finale at Baltimore on Saturday night but did not play. Robinson rushed for 1,343 yards and 14 touchdowns last season at Alabama. The Commanders selected him with the 98th pick in the 2022 draft. Commanders Head Coach Ron Rivera visited Robinson at the hospital Sunday evening and said in a tweet that the running back is doing well and wants to get back with the team as soon as possible.
