Man driving stolen car crashes into jersey wall on I-495

Travel times were slowed on Interstate 495 in the D.C. area Saturday morning after a suspect in an armed carjacking crashed a stolen car into a jersey wall on the Woodrow Wilson Bridge.

It all started when a man stole a Toyota Camry at gun point in the 3300 block of Southgate Drive around 7:45 a.m., Fairfax County Police say. The victim was unharmed and the suspect drove away.

Police say the suspect left Alexandria, Virginia, and went into Maryland. The stolen Camry went back into Fairfax County an hour later and officers followed the car.

The suspect hit a jersey wall on the Woodrow Wilson Bridge.

Police took the suspect into custody and found a gun in the car. His name was not released as charges have not been filed yet.

Police aren’t aware of any other crashes related to their pursuit.

The scene highlighted what residents say are the park's best features: its accessibility and affordability right in the nation's capital. The historic park, especially the golf course, has caught the eye of President Donald Trump, who wants to turn it into a world-class golf venue. It's part of his grand vision for Washington, D.C., where he has torn down storied structures, remade or renamed others and deployed the National Guard for more than a year. But some residents fear the planned changes to the golf course — where Trump has visited with a cabinet member, a well-known golf course architect and blueprints — risk altering the character of a place that has served Washingtonians of many stripes for more than a century. Turning the park into an upscale golf course will mean costlier fees and a loss of public space, residents worry.
