Body found in Fairfax Co. park ID’d as missing teen

WASHINGTON — The remains of a Fairfax County teen who had been missing for two weeks were found in a park less than a mile from her home last week.

Fairfax County police said Monday that investigators have confirmed that the body recovered was Jholie Moussa, 16. She was last seen on Jan. 12 near her family’s home on Sonia Court.

Moussa was found covered in leaves and brush in a wooded area of Woodlawn Park in the Mount Vernon area of the county on Friday.

No cause of death has been released and autopsy results are pending, police said.

Police described the girl’s death as “an isolated incident” but said they continue to pursue all leads.

September is Suicide Prevention Month, and Betsy Stephenson, an Alexandria, Virginia, resident and a mother who lost her son to suicide, wants people to talk about it. "By not talking about suicide, we are not going to make it go away. In fact, I think that we could inadvertently give it a little more power than it deserves," she told WTOP. One of the things that Stephenson wants families to know is that people who are struggling can appear to be doing well. "You can be very high-functioning as a depressed person or an anxious person," she said. "You can be connected socially. You can be doing well at school or work. You can be making plans, smiling, laughing, engaged, but still be struggling deeply, you know, cosmically, inside."
