Some Fairfax Co. students receive laptops to start school year

CHANTILLY, Va. — Some Fairfax County students will return to class with a new digital-focused curriculum and a new learning tool in their backpacks.

Fairfax County is rolling out a new technology-focused program called FCPSOn that will, in part, provide laptops to each student at participating schools.

“We are always looking for new ways to enhance learning and ensure that our students are prepared for the world they will step into,” said Superintendent Karen Garza.

“Teachers support them by leveraging technology to assist in both the learning and creation process.”

[related_gallery align=”right”]Schools that are taking part in the program include Chantilly High as well as eight nearby middle and elementary schools. Students will also receive laptops at six other high schools in the Fairfax County Public School system that are part of a technology-related grant run by the Virginia Department of Education.

School officials hope to eventually expand the laptop program. The initial roll out will help “collect data on student learning and teacher professional development, including the successes and challenges.”

Students will also learn how to use technology responsibly.

September is Suicide Prevention Month, and Betsy Stephenson, an Alexandria, Virginia, resident and a mother who lost her son to suicide, wants people to talk about it. "By not talking about suicide, we are not going to make it go away. In fact, I think that we could inadvertently give it a little more power than it deserves," she told WTOP. One of the things that Stephenson wants families to know is that people who are struggling can appear to be doing well. "You can be very high-functioning as a depressed person or an anxious person," she said. "You can be connected socially. You can be doing well at school or work. You can be making plans, smiling, laughing, engaged, but still be struggling deeply, you know, cosmically, inside."
