Thomas is making a post

Thomas is making a post in the backend of the new WordPress. Let’s see how this goes.

So far is seems pretty normal, though I find it funny that each line of text creates a new block. I guess that makes it easier if I wanted to move a paragraph up or down, but what’s wrong with the old copy-paste method?

I have just learned that I type the forward slash key to add a block that’s not just text. Let’s try that below.

That Rob is one handsome guy!

OK, an image — simple enough. But what about some of these other block options I’m seeing? Let’s explore.

Now I’ve split my story into three columns! Woah, things are getting crazy.

I believe I’ve made it a 25/50/25 ratio. Let’s see if that’s the case. I think I’ll try putting an audio file or something in the middle rather than just an image, since we’ve already added an image above.

I’ve added a video to the middle, but now I’m questioning why I’ve added three columns in the middle of the story. I can’t keep writing over there, because that would just be confusing!

What the hell, we’ll just add a new feature we haven’t tried yet. Maybe … buttons?

I added the buttons! Those will probably be useful for our weather stories and where ever else we normally insert a bulleted list of links. But then, what to add below them? If nothing, there’s a bunch of white space.

I added the “latest posts” widget. It fit right in there below the buttons. Let’s see how this looks on the front end.

Wow! That looked horrible. The video showed up much smaller, so I had this skinny column of text running down the left side. Also, while the buttons are next to each other here, there wasn’t nearly as much room on the front end, so they were stacked on top of each other. I do not need the latest stories widget below the buttons, so I deleted them.

I deleted all but two paragraphs of text from the left column, and just clicked in the area below the video here in the back end to get out of that column format. Hopefully this all aligns well on the front end now. Let’s see.

That looks a lot better! Only thing is the alignment of the buttons on the right side looks a little wonky. I’m going to try and align them differently, then move on.

Boom! That looks a lot better. Let’s try adding some different features now.

I’ve added latest stories to my right. I’m not sure how much I will need to type to align properly, and preview is broken. Not ideal.

Adding another line, going to try and nail this alignment first try. I think one more line should do it.

Please be right.

It wasn’t quite right, but it will be right now. If it’s not, well, I probably won’t do anything but I’ll be mildly annoyed.

We’re good! Now can I figure out how to make a subhead?

That was easy

Let’s add a pull quote. I think we could utilize those in some of our more feature-oriented stories.

We’re good! Now can I figure out how to make a subhead?

An enthralling quote, to be sure. But how much text do I need over here to make the spacing right? I honestly have no idea.

But I intend to find out.

Well, it was a lot more than just those first two lines. There’s a lot of white space above and below the pull quote. But that actually makes sense, because it helps the quote stand out from the rest of the story.

And isn’t that the point? The emphasis it creates is nice.

I think one more lengthy paragraph here might be money, but if anything it will come up just short, like I do pretty much every day. Woah, that got a little too deep. Let’s check the alignment!

I think I need one more line. Onward!

The show goes on. I wonder what else I should add? I think I need to take a break.

My break has concluded. Let’s see how a table looks.

Looks like I’m the best!

Let’s add another photo now with some text to the side. Should be nice.

I failed at trying to put the vertically oriented photo in.
