GAITHERSBURG, Md. — A new bridge project in Montgomery County could mean an easier commute for a lot of people along Interstate 270 by 2020.
With cameras at the ready, Gov. Larry Hogan broke ground on the four-lane bridge that will connect Watkins Mill Road over I-270. Connecting entry and exit ramps will provide direct access for interstate travelers.
“We got it funded. It wasn’t supposed to happen but we’re making it happen. It’s not going to answer all the questions to the traffic on 270, but it’s gonna (SIC) have a huge impact in this area,” Hogan said.
Transportation planners said the $97 million project, in the works since 2013, will relieve congestion where the highway meets Route 124 and where routes 124 and 355 intersect.
“Easing congestion on I-270 and nearby roads will improve the quality of life for so many Montgomery County residents that use this highway every day,” said Montgomery County Executive Isiah “Ike” Leggett.
Hogan said the project will be complete by 2020.
“The roads are going to be tremendously improved when we get done but it is a problem while you’re building them,” Hogan said after the news conference. “There’s a transition period that’ll be difficult.”
