On a per-share basis, the Hoboken, New Jersey-based company said it had a loss of 23 cents. Earnings, adjusted for one-time gains and costs, were 44 cents per share.
The publisher posted revenue of $386.4 million in the period.
John Wiley & Sons expects full-year earnings in the range of $4.60 to $5.05 per share.
