WHEATON, Ill. (AP) — Mount Union’s 85-game, regular-season winning streak ended Saturday when Aiden Byrne blocked a potential tying extra point with 22 seconds left in Wheaton’s 24-23 victory.
Wheaton also snapped Mount Union’s streak of 38 straight season-opening wins in their Division III matchup.
Kayden Minner’s 1-yard run put Mount Union on the verge of tying the game before Byrne blocked the extra point.
Mount Union had rallied from a 17-7 halftime deficit to tie it late in the third quarter. Wheaton pulled ahead for good when Malachi Jones caught a 5-yard pass from Mark Forcucci to cap a 10-play, 96-yard drive with 5:28 remaining.
Mount Union has won an NCAA Division III-record 13 titles and has reached at least as far as the semifinals in 29 of the last 33 seasons. Mount Union’s last championship came in 2017.
