Rutherford throws for 140 yards and scores 2 TDs, Stephen F. Austin defeats East Texas A&M 44-7

NACOGDOCHES, Texas (AP) — Gavin Rutherford rushed for two touchdowns and threw for 140 yards, Jaylen Jenkins also ran for a score, and Stephen F. Austin took down East Texas A&M 44-7 on Saturday night.

The Lumberjacks (2-0, 2-0 Southland), ranked 13th in the Stats Perform FCS Top 25, won their sixth straight home opener and 12th straight game since an 0-2 start in 2025.

After going three-and-out on their first drive, the Lumberjacks scored on their next three drives to take a 21-7 lead. They took advantage of an interception at the opposing 5-yard line, adding three more points before heading to the locker rooms.

Jenkins broke free for a 40-yard touchdown run early in the third quarter that extended the lead further, and the Lumberjacks got one more field goal before the end of the game.

Preston Alford led with 76 yards rushing on six carries, including a 51-yard dash, and Clayton Wayland reeled in all four of his targets for 46 yards.

Carlos Alvarado went 3-for-3 on field goals, connecting from 23, 26, and 37 yards.

For the Lions, Eric Rodriguez was 9-for-16 passing for 110 yards, a touchdown, and two interceptions.

Smiths runs for two TDs in Louisiana-Lafayette’s 38-7 victory over Lamar

LAFAYETTE, La. (AP) — Darrell Smith accounted for two of Louisiana-Lafayette's five touchdown runs and the Ragin' Cajuns opened their season with a 38-7 victory over Lamar on Saturday night. Smith finished with 84 yards rushing on 10 carries. Lunch Winfield also added 84 yards rushing and a score, and was 15-of-21 passing for 189 yards but threw two interceptions. Anthony Reagan Jr. and Steven Blanco also had touchdown runs for the Ragin' Cajuns. Smith capped a 10-play drive with a 2-yard TD plunge in the first quarter and then broke loose on a 25-yard run early in the second to give Louisiana-Lafayette a 14-0 lead. Reagan added an 11-yard touchdown run and Winfield's 22-yard TD made it 28-0 at the break. Blanco's short-yardage TD run made it 35-0 near the end of the third.
