MOBILE, Ala. (AP) — Bishop Davenport threw for 154 yards and a touchdown and ran for another as South Alabama beat Southeastern Louisiana 39-14 on Saturday in the Jaguars’ season opener.
Davenport completed 18 of 27 passes without an interception. South Alabama rushed for 241 yards and three touchdowns, with PJ Martin leading the way with 69 yards on 18 carries.
The Jaguars scored the first 19 points as Davenport connected with Brendan Jenkins for a 26-yard touchdown less than two minutes into the game, and Trae’von Dunbar added a 1-yard rushing score late in the first quarter.
Southeastern Louisiana (0-2) cut the deficit to 22-14 early in the third quarter on Kyle Lowe’s second touchdown pass to Lonnie Shinn.
South Alabama responded with the final 17 points. Davis Little kicked a 26-yard field goal before Davenport scored on a 2-yard run to extend the lead to 32-14. Martin added a 3-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter following a 15-play, 57-yard drive that lasted 8:15.
Little made all three of his field-goal attempts.
Lowe threw for 186 yards and two touchdowns but was intercepted twice. Shinn caught four passes for 54 yards and both Southeastern Louisiana touchdowns.
